Did you know more than 29,000 pets live in College Station?
Yes, our furry friends are cute and lovable. But they also generate hundreds of pounds of solid waste every day. If you don’t dispose of that not-so-cute waste properly, rain can wash it directly into our storm sewer system and waterways.
The contaminated stormwater runoff impairs the water quality of our creeks and streams, increasing the health risks for people and pets alike. Pet waste bacteria and viruses can cause Salmonella, E. coli, and Parvovirus infections.
So, what can you do about it?
When outside enjoying the fall weather with your pets, always be sure to pick up after them, especially in parks and other public areas. It’s a good idea to carry a scooper and bags with you. Some pet owners travel light and use plastic bags as a glove. They scoop the waste into the bag, invert and seal it, and then toss it into a solid waste container.
Pet waste can also hit your pocketbook since it’s considered littering if you allow your animal to defecate on someone else’s property or in public areas without removing it. Of course, since you’re responsible for your adorable pet, you pay the fine!
