Transcript

Grace Hallowell:

Good morning, everyone. My name is Grace Hollowell with the City of College Station, and today my guest is Miss Cheletia Johnson, our Lincoln Recreation Center supervisor. Good morning.

Cheletia Johnson:

Good morning.

Grace Hallowell:

How are you today?

Cheletia Johnson:

I am good. How are you doing?

Grace Hallowell:

I am doing well. So, we’re here to talk about the senior holiday party and dance, right?

Cheletia Johnson:

Yes, yes.

Grace Hallowell:

Alrighty. So, tell us a little about these events. They sound exciting.

Cheletia Johnson:

Yes, they are. It’s the holiday party for our sensational 55 and older citizens. It will be Friday, December the 9th from 6:30 to 10:30 P.M. at the Lincoln Recreation Center. Again, this is for those aged 55 and older.

Grace Hallowell:

Got you. It sounds like a fun way to beat those winter blues.

Cheletia Johnson:

Exactly. And it’s going to be a casual Christmas party. You don’t have to dress to impress, just come in your casual Christmas attire, put on your boogie shoes and have a good time.

Grace Hallowell:

Alrighty. What other activities can you expect at the holiday party?

Cheletia Johnson:

Definitely, a lot of fun, a lot of cheer, delicious food.

Grace Hallowell:

Always good.

Cheletia Johnson:

Yes, music and games.

Grace Hallowell:

Perfect.

Cheletia Johnson:

And, we will have a photo booth where seniors can take a picture in the photo booth as something to commemorate the event.

Grace Hallowell:

Awesome. Is this the first time doing this event or is this something that happens every year?

Cheletia Johnson:

Well, it’s something that we’ve been doing starting last year. Last year was our first year to host a holiday party and was more of an elegant dress to impress type or deal with the live band. But this time we wanted to change it up a little bit because I don’t know if you like me, I love my jeans and T-shirts.

Grace Hallowell:

Me too. The cozier, the better.

Cheletia Johnson:

ExactlyEveryone will feel comfortable attending. If you don’t have anything dressy to wear, just come in some jeans or something casual, and just have a good time with other people that are in your age bracket.

Grace Hallowell:

Yes. Always good to connect with your peers.

Cheletia Johnson:

Yes, I agree.

Grace Hallowell:

So, what other events are going on at the Lincoln Center?

Cheletia Johnson:

There’s always something going on at the Lincoln Center, especially for our 55 and older group. They have arts and crafts that’s going to be going on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. They have a lot of health presentations that are going to be going on. Of course, the forever size on Tuesdays and Thursdays and bingo. Cannot miss bingo on Wednesdays and Motivational Moments that’s going to take place on Thursdays. Just quite a lot of activities, but everything is on the website. All the information from Lincoln Center to the Bob and Wanda Meyer Senior Center and the Southwood Community Center, the information can be found on the website.

Grace Hallowell:

Perfect. And that’s cstx.gov/seniors.

Cheletia Johnson:

That is correct.

Grace Hallowell:

All the info is there. So, let’s talk a little about the winter dance and games. That’s separate from the holiday party, right?

Cheletia Johnson:

Yes. That will take place on Friday, December the 16th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Southwood Community Center. It’s an evening of fun, dancing, board games, and they will also have light refreshments at that event. For our 55 and older population. The admission is free, and registration is not required for any of the special events.

Grace Hallowell:

Perfect. And yes, Southwood has a really nice dance floor with a disco ball. So, that’ll definitely be a fun time.

Cheletia Johnson:

Yes, I agree. And most of our dances, the seniors just love to come and fellowship with each other and listen to the music from the ’60s up to now, line dancing country western, RNB, blues, a genre of music for everybody to come and have a good time.

Grace Hallowell:

Yeah. It’s really special to relive those nostalgic memories from your favorite songs from back in the day.

Cheletia Johnson:

Exactly. Especially, even if you don’t have the best dancing skills, you can still get out there and have a good time.

Grace Hallowell:

Right. Exactly.

Cheletia Johnson:

Yes.

Grace Hallowell:

Alrighty. Is there anything else going on? Anything else you can tell us?

Cheletia Johnson:

The open house, the holiday open house at the Bob and Wanda Meyer Senior and Community Center, will take place on Wednesday, December the 7th. And it’s from 10:00 AM to noon and it’s just a holiday celebration. The facility is going to be decorated for Christmas. You can take a picture with Santa Claus and just have a good time at the holiday open house.

But again, all of this information… Because I don’t want to miss anything, is on the website, and any questions that someone might have, those answers could be found through the website.

Grace Hallowell:

Perfect. Yeah. And the open house is a good opportunity to learn about the senior programs happening, correct?

Cheletia Johnson:

Yes, that is correct. They will have details on the different activities that’s taking place at all of the senior citizen centers. We have three in College Station and so the information will be available at the holiday open house.

Grace Hallowell:

Perfect. I know sometimes it’s tough to keep straight everything that’s going on. So, going to an event like this is really helpful.

Cheletia Johnson:

Yes, it will be helpful. And for everybody to congregate together, fellowship with each other, feel the Christmas spirit and just have a good time with each other. 55 and older, this is a time where sometimes people can feel alone, but fellowship and going to these different events can help minimize that lonely feeling. So, this is a great opportunity for people to come out and get together.

Grace Hallowell:

Yeah. Time to get holly and jolly.

Cheletia Johnson:

Yeah. That’s a good way to put it. But again, all of this information is on the website. They’re more than welcome to call any of the facilities and they will share the same information. Just check it out.

Grace Hallowell:

And again, the website is cstx.gov/seniors. And if there’s nothing else, thank you so much for being here today.

Cheletia Johnson:

Thank you. Thank you for inviting me.

Grace Hallowell:

And that’s Stuff You Don’t Usually See.
