Prevent holiday vehicle burglaries and firearm thefts

Unfortunately, this is the time of the year when thefts increase, including the stealing of firearms from vehicles and residences. Recently, firearms were stolen from three locked vehicles that were burglarized.

The College Station Police Department encourages you to take proactive measures to make it difficult for would-be criminals to break into your vehicles and home.

Vehicles

Park your vehicle in a locked garage. If a garage isn't an option, be sure to lock your doors.
Take any items of value with you or lock them in the trunk.
Hide items such as auxiliary cords that would suggest an electronic device is in the vehicle.
Park in well-lit areas when shopping or running errands.

Firearm Owners

It's also that time of year when more drivers have handguns or rifles in their vehicles due to hunting season and traveling.

Don't leave firearms in your vehicle if at all possible.
If you have to leave weapons in your vehicle, lock them in the trunk.
If that isn't an option, make sure firearms -- and accessories such as gun cases, ammunition and ear protection -- are hidden.
Criminals target vehicles with subtle indicators that a firearm might be inside such as gun supports or hunting club stickers.

Residences

Keep your doors and windows locked, including the garage door.
Activate your security system if you have one.
Store your weapons in a locked safe.
Firearms that might be kept out overnight for security purposes should be locked in a safe before you leave your residence.

Finally, always be aware of your surroundings and call your local police department to report suspicious people or activity. The safety of our community does not have borders. It's the goal of every law enforcement agency to protect the citizens that we serve. Be the eyes and ears of your police department.
