By Trey Reeves, Parks & Recreation Marketing Coordinator
The College Station City Council meeting on July 11 began with a proclamation that resonates deeply with the community's values and lifestyle. Mayor John Nichols officially declared July Parks and Recreation Month, highlighting the city's commitment to fostering a healthy, active, and connected community.
The proclamation is more than a ceremonial act—it's a call to action for residents to embrace College Station's vast recreational opportunities. Mayor Nichols emphasized the essential role of parks and recreation in the community's well-being by providing space and activities promoting active lifestyles.
"I've always felt like the citizens of College Station have committed themselves to having an excellent parks and recreation program," Nichols said. "And the staff really exemplifies that."
Parks and recreation programs and facilities are critical to the fabric of our vibrant community. They offer more than just a place to play, contributing significantly to residents' physical, mental, and social health.
Prioritizing parks and recreation means emphasizing health and wellness, community engagement, the environment, economic impact, and, as this year's Parks and Recreation Month theme suggests, a sense of belonging.
Mayor Nichols' proclamation reminds us of the importance of parks and recreation in our daily lives. As we move through July and beyond, let's explore, enjoy, and support our local parks. Whether it's a daily walk, a weekend picnic, or participating in a community event, embrace the enormous benefits our facilities provide.
So, grab your family and friends, head to your nearest park, or sign up for that class or league you've heard so much about. Let's make the most of Parks and Recreation Month and celebrate the incredible spaces that make College Station a wonderful place to live.
