Since its inception in 1984, the annual Point in Time Count has been essential in gaining insight into homelessness and tracking progress toward ending it across the United States. On Jan. 23, College Station will participate in the nationwide initiative to determine the extent of homelessness in our community.

The Brazos Valley Coalition for the Homeless will coordinate the PIT Count covering Brazos, Robertson, Milam, Leon, Madison, Grimes, and Burleson counties. The effort provides a snapshot of the homeless population in those areas, offering crucial data policymakers and service providers can use to inform funding allocations, policy decisions, and the development of local and federal programs.

The PIT Count’s significance extends beyond data collection. Every unsheltered person encountered will receive a bag with essential supplies and be offered resources that can lead to shelter and stabilization. The compassionate approach ensures immediate needs are met while working toward long-term solutions.

Here are three ways you can get involved:

1. Report Locations

If you know the location of an unhoused person, you can report it to the hotline at 979-589-0635. Leave a message with the location and description of the person you observed. Messages will be checked daily, and representatives from the coalition will attempt to make contact and provide help.

2. Volunteer for the Count

Your time and effort can make a significant and positive impact. To volunteer, contact Alaina Jalufka, the Point in Time coordinator for the Brazos Valley, at 979-779-3663 (ext. 112) or alainaj@bvfb.org.

3. Donate Supplies

Essential supply bags are a lifeline for those in need. Donations can be dropped off at the Community Services Department at College Station City Hall. Accepted items include nonperishable ready-to-eat food (in containers that don’t require a can opener), travel-size hygiene supplies, socks, and feminine hygiene products.

Let’s come together as a community to make a difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness. Your support and involvement are crucial in our efforts to ensure everyone has a safe place to call home.
