Soccer tournament celebrated the late Rusty Jones

155

Arthur “Rusty” Jones spent more than 25 years of his life as a resident of the Brazos Valley, where he was active in the soccer community as a player, referee and mentor. His love for the sport led him to youth, high school and adult fields across the state, and he gave back to the community by mentoring scores of soccer referees.

Rusty passed away in March at the age of 62 after a battle with cancer. His style, laugh and hard work will be missed.

A youth and adult soccer tournament was played on Saturday and Sunday at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex to raise money for Rusty’s widow. A total of 250 players and 17 teams participated, and organizers were able to meet their fundraising goal.

Thank you to all the participants and others who made this worthwhile event a success.
