City’s affordable housing needs guide the process of developing an effective Housing Action Plan

By David Brower, Community Development Analyst

What songs or lyrics come to mind when you think of the word “home”? For me, it ranges anywhere from “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” to “Sweet Home Alabama” and “…land of the free and home of the brave.”

Home is where we sleep, relax, and spend time with our families and friends, but it’s also where we put down roots and create memories.

Unfortunately, rising rents and home prices have made affording a home difficult for many.

The City of College Station is committed to ensuring options for safe, dignified, and financially attainable shelter for all through its Comprehensive Plan. Quality housing options for various income levels are essential for economic growth, neighborhood integrity, and individual health and well-being.

The city is developing a Housing Action Plan to help the city identify ways to implement the Comprehensive Plan’s housing goals to create more affordable housing. To help drive the effort, the College Station City Council recently appointed a 13-member Housing Action Plan Steering Committee to recommend a plan that reflects the community’s vision for housing action and initiatives.

The committee will meet during the next several months and will engage the public and specific stakeholders for input. Stay tuned for meeting dates and more information about how you can get involved.
