In the ongoing quest to address housing challenges, the City of College Station is leveraging its Comprehensive Plan as a roadmap for action. With an eye on generating more housing opportunities, the city is creating a strategic Housing Action Plan.
The Comprehensive Plan sets housing goals as guiding principles for the Housing Action Plan, which will operationalize those goals. Last fall, the City Council appointed the Housing Action Plan Steering Committee, a dedicated team of citizens tasked to work with city staff to formulate and execute the plan.
The detailed Existing Conditions Report provides insight into College Station’s housing situation. Notable findings include:
- A significant portion of College Station workers reside outside the city limits.
- Predominant housing types are single-family homes and multifamily apartments. Middle housing options such as duplexes, condos, and townhomes are noticeably absent.
- Projections indicate an impending housing supply shortage by 2030, underscoring the urgency for proactive measures.
- A considerable proportion of renters and homeowners with mortgages are burdened by housing costs, exceeding the recommended threshold of 30% of monthly income.
- The median sales price for non-new construction homes in 2023 was $389,000, posing affordability challenges for middle-income families.
The steering committee and city staff are exploring tools and strategies to facilitate the Comprehensive Plan’s housing goals, focusing on devising affordable housing options. Citizen engagement and feedback are integral role in shaping the plan.
Three surveys are designed to solicit community feedback and insights. The general survey is for College Station residents and those who may work in the city but don’t live here. College student may participate in both the general and student surveys.
In addition, a public meeting on Tuesday, March 26, at 6 p.m. at College Station City Hall is another way residents can learn more about the plan and provide input. The forum encourages constructive dialogue and collaboration to achieve shared housing objectives.
College Station’s proactive approach to housing reflects its commitment to fostering thriving and cohesive neighborhoods. By aligning housing initiatives with the Comprehensive Plan and prioritizing citizen engagement, the city aims to pave the way for a resilient housing landscape where all residents can prosper.
