Be a community game changer by serving on a City committee, board, or commission

As a civic-minded College Station resident, you probably vote on Election Day and write an occasional letter to the editor. You may even attend a few City Council meetings.

But have you ever wondered how you might be more directly involved in local government decisions? You could always run for a place on the City Council, but you don’t have to be a council member to make a genuine and meaningful difference.

How about volunteering to serve on one of the city’s boards, committees, or commissions? These essential citizen groups have a tremendous influence on our community’s quality of life, and we offer abundant opportunities for you to make a difference. If you are a registered voter and live in College Station, you meet the basic qualifications to serve.

We encourage you to attend a Committee, Board, and Commission 101 seminar on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m. in the Bush 4141 Community Room at City Hall. The session will help you understand the requirements, duties, and limitations of serving, while also describing the City staff’s role and how the meeting bodies contribute to addressing local issues.

Complete descriptions of city boards, commissions, and committees are available at cstx.gov/committees. For more information or a paper application, contact the City Secretary’s Office at cso@cstx.gov or 979-764-3541.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28. The City Council will make appointments in January.

With your help, we can continue to make College Station one of the nation’s best places to live, work and play.
