Podcasts are more than just entertainment – they can also serve as a powerful civic resource. Cities, universities, and nonprofits increasingly use them to share updates, explain complex issues, and highlight community voices. The flexibility of podcasts allows listeners to stay informed about local initiatives, services, and events while on the go.
Tuesday’s International Podcast Day celebrates not just the medium’s enormous growth, but its impact on communities. For us, “What’s Up, College Station” has become more than a podcast; it’s a bridge between residents and their local government. It makes complex topics approachable, highlights the people who make our city thrive, and helps residents stay informed and connected.
How Podcasts Began
The term podcast first appeared in 2004 as a blend of “iPod” and “broadcast.” That same year, software developer Dave Winer and former MTV video jockey Adam Curry created an application that allowed users to download audio content directly to portable devices. The innovation marked the beginning of the on-demand audio era, granting listeners the freedom to enjoy programs at their own convenience.
Apple soon added podcasts to iTunes, making them widely accessible. As the medium grew, news outlets, educators, and local organizations began using podcasts to share stories and information in ways traditional media could not. Today, there are millions of shows covering nearly every topic imaginable—from public affairs and government to health, history, and entertainment.
And That’s What’s Up
The City of College Station began podcasting several years ago with “Stuff You Don’t Usually See,” followed by “All Up in Your Business.”
In 2023, we launched “What’s Up, College Station?” to provide residents with a convenient and engaging way to learn about their city. The podcast addressed a growing need for transparent and accessible communication, offering a closer look at city services beyond press releases or social media posts.
The podcast has featured dozens of city staff members, including first responders, public works crews, historians, planners, and recreation leaders. Episodes have spotlighted major infrastructure projects, such as the Greater Northgate Small Area Plan, public safety initiatives, cultural and recreational programs, and behind-the-scenes stories that highlight the people and passion driving our community forward.
The podcast continues to evolve and recently transitioned into a longer format with a fresh look. New episodes drop every Friday on your favorite podcast platform (don’t forget to rate and share!):
You can also watch each episode on Optimum Channel 19, at blog.cstx.gov, or on our YouTube Channel.
We invite you to celebrate the power of conversation and connection. Tune in to “What’s Up, College Station?” and discover the many ways your City works for you.
