Do you spend too many hours with your eyes glued to digital screens? Maybe it’s time to log off and step outside.

The College Station Parks and Recreation Department encourages residents to power down their devices and enjoy the outdoors on Unplug Texas Day on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

Participating in outdoor activities not only provides a break from screens but also improves physical health, mental well-being, and social bonds. Whether it’s fishing at a pond, walking with friends, or having a picnic under the trees, there are many simple ways to enjoy time outside and feel more connected.

Gov. Greg Abbott recently signed Senate Bill 2232, officially establishing Unplug Texas Day as a statewide observance. The Texas Recreation and Park Society created the initiative to inspire people to reduce screen time, connect with friends and family, and discover their local parks.

Excessive screen time is linked to less sleep, more anxiety, and decreased physical activity. Fortunately, your Parks and Recreation Department provides free or affordable options to battle these issues and promote healthier communities.

With 57 developed and eight undeveloped parks covering nearly 1,971 acres, College Station has plenty of interesting places to explore. Our park system features 42 miles of walking trails, 65 exercise stations, 85 play units, 26 swing sets, seven fishing ponds, seven rentable pavilions, three dog parks, two pools, two splash pads, a skate park, and an all-abilities playground.

Share your photos on social media with #CSTXparks and #UnplugTexas to show how you’re unplugging. Some of life’s best moments happen away from screens!
