What can a little mud teach you about the natural world? More than you might think!
On Mud Day, kids can get their hands dirty while discovering how mud connects to plants, animals, soil and the environment around them.
The free, family-friendly, come-and-go event, hosted by College Station Parks and Recreation, is on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 8–11 a.m. at the Gary Halter Nature Center at Lick Creek Park.
Here’s a closer look at the fun and learning in store:
- Build a giant swallow nest using mud, sticks, cardboard and paper while learning how swallows build their nests.
- Take aim at inflatable zombie targets by making and throwing your own mud balls.
- Mix mud and paint to create a colorful mud painting on a community mural.
- Step into the mud kitchen and whip up mud soup, cupcakes, pies and more using kitchenware.
- Dig through the mud for hidden treasures, including golden coins, shark teeth and marbles.
- Learn about composting and critters, then create your own compost cup with dirt, water, leaves and cardboard.
- Plant a native seed to take home and watch your new plant grow.
Bring a change of clothes or plenty of towels for the ride home. Quick rinse stations will be available on site. Additional parking is available at the Lick Creek equestrian entrance off Rock Prairie Road.
Grab your sense of adventure, your friends and your family, and dive in for a muddy good time!
