Council Workshop Update (Oct. 27) — Christmas at the Creek

The council voted 6-1 to approve plans for the 2011 Christmas at the Creek event in the Wolf Pen Creek Corridor. Council Member Jess Fields voted against the motion. The event is a transition from past holiday seasons, when the city’s holiday event was at Central Park. The Parks and Recreation Department is welcoming participation from many non-profit groups, several businesses, the Arts Center and numerous churches. As part of the transition, the city will still be lighting a Holiday Village at Central Park, but Wolf Pen Creek Park will be the focal point for visitors beginning Thanksgiving weekend and continuing through New Years Day.

The major activity nights will be at the Wolf Pen Creek Park Complex on Dec. 2-3 and Dec. 9-10. Festivities will include photos with Santa, hayrides, two entertainment stages, hot chocolate and cookies, children’s area, baking contest, pet night, live Nativity and vendors selling arts and crafts. The primary costs associated with Christmas at the Creek are part of the Parks and Recreation General Fund operating budget. Sponsors are being secured to help offset costs.
