Being ranked in the top 10 is getting to be a habit for College Station. After all, why should the Aggie football team have all the fun?
For the third straight year, College Station has been ranked among the nation’s top 10 college towns by Livability.com.
Do you know what the sweetest part is? We’re the only Texas city to ever make the list in the four years of its existence.
College Station was ranked No. 10 this year after claiming the top spot in 2012. We were ranked no. 7 in 2011 and were unranked on the inaugural list in 2010.
Despite falling nine spots, College Station (Texas A&M University) is one of only four cities that have appeared on the list three times, joining Boulder (University of Colorado), Ann Arbor (University of Michigan) and Athens (University of Georgia). Only five other cities have made the list twice.
We know we’re an awesome college town, but why does Livability.com think we’re so special?
“The best college towns appeal not only to potential students but to potential residents and businesses looking for strong economies and opportunities to grow,” said Livability.com’s Matt Carmichael. “For a small to mid-sized town, having a great college or university can add immeasurably to the livability. Schools provide a level of economic stability, a constant influx of new residents and cultural and sporting events that cities couldn’t produce on their own.”
“Few cities are as tied to a university as College Station is to Texas A&M,.” Carmichael added. “Locals refer to the city and surrounding region as Aggieland due to the loyal support residents show the university, and students gladly give back to the community by participating in service projects such as the Big Event, which began in 1982 and is now the largest one-day student-run service project in the nation.”
Here’s this year’s top 10 college towns:
- Boulder, Colo.
- Ann Arbor, Mich.
- Gainesville, Fla.
- Columbia, Mo.
- Lexington, Ky.
- Iowa City, Iowa
- Missoula, Mont.
- Madison, Wisc.
- Fayetteville, Ark.
- College Station, Texas
The list of College Station’s recent accolades continues to grow. Last week, we were ranked No. 3 on Kiplinger’s list of 10 Great Places to Live. Did I mention that we are also the only Texas city on that list?
Throw in the proud fact that we’re the only Texas city with a team in college football’s preseason top 10, and we’ve had an awesome week!
