Poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy habits have led to an epidemic of health problems across the country, including College Station.
How can you get more active and break that cycle?
The Parks & Recreation Department has always encouraged active lifestyles through fitness equipment and trails in our parks, and now we offer free fitness-related programs. Along with a healthy dose of encouragement (see what we did there?), these programs are a good start on the road to healthier living.
Are you up to the challenge?
We’ve partnered with local fitness professionals to offer free community workouts each Saturday through July at the W.A. Tarrow Pavilion at the Lincoln Recreation Center. The 45-minute classes start at 8:30 a.m. and feature a variety of workouts for all ages and fitness levels. Modifications will be provided and no equipment or pre-registration is required.
While the class is free, monetary donations will be accepted to benefit Project Sunshine.
In addition, for every FreeFit class you attend, you’ll earn points for prizes. The more classes you attend, the more chances you have to win. Winners will be drawn at the Family Fit Fest on July 26.
These four classes could be your keys to beginning a healthier lifestyle:
- Insanity
May 3, 17, 31 | June 14, 28 | July 12
Taught by fitness trainer Erika Ervin, Insanity uses max interval training techniques, including cardio and polymeric drills with intervals of strength, power, resistance and core training. Exercises will combine maximum-intensity exercises with short periods of rest. - Boot Camp
May 24 | June 21 | July 19
Taught by fitness trainer Terrance Smith, Boot Camp focuses on flexibility and agility through cardiovascular training with maximum effort exercises, followed by active recovery. - Vinyasa Flow Yoga
May 10 | June 7 | July 5
Taught by fitness trainer Susannah McNutt, Vinyasa Flow Yoga works on core and leg strength, flexibility and well-being. Exercise your mind, body, and soul through the power of yoga. - Kid Friendly Insanity/Family Fit Fest
July 26
Bring the whole family for a kid-friendly Insanity class from 8:30-11:30 a.m., followed by an action-packed morning of fun and fitness. This free event is designed to engage parents and kids in fitness and nutrition activities. Participants can enjoy music, food and interactive booths hosted by local vendors, and prizes will be awarded to FreeFit participants.
We encourage you to take advantage of your local parks and programs to improve your health and quality of life. Whether you commit to walking once a week, taking the kids to the playground or attending FreeFit, every step counts.
