Transcript
Grace Hallowell:
What’s Up, College Station? I’m Grace Hallowell and today I’m joined again by Ms. Cheletia Johnson. Good morning.
Cheletia Johnson:
Good morning.
Grace Hallowell:
All right, so today we are here to talk about the Women’s Empowerment Luncheon.
Cheletia Johnson:
Yes.
Grace Hallowell:
Which is a very important event.
Cheletia Johnson:
Yes, it is.
Grace Hallowell:
All right, so tell us a little bit about it.
Cheletia Johnson:
The Women’s Empowerment Luncheon, this will be our first time to host, but it’s also in celebration of Women’s History Month.
Grace Hallowell:
Yes.
Cheletia Johnson:
We are going to celebrate the multiple contributions women have done to not only our American history, but to world history. So, we want to celebrate women, but also talk about things that are relevant to the workplace. The overall theme for the luncheon is moving beyond the glass ceiling without shattering the glass. So, that’s a deep topic.
Grace Hallowell:
Yes.
Cheletia Johnson:
Because as women, we all want to advance in our career choices and trying to figure out how we can we advance within our department or our career fields. We have two very professional women that are going to lead the luncheon and talk about how we can move beyond that glass ceiling. Our guest speakers are, Ms. Tracy Foster, who’s the associate agency director for the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service and Ms. Patti Urbani, who is a career coach and a retiree from Texas A&M University. And so, they’re going to share some tips with us on how to move beyond the glass ceiling.
Grace Hallowell:
Yes, I know especially for young women who are either just entering the workforce or even women who have been in the workforce for a few years, it’s tough, and you get to a point where you feel like you’re stuck, and there’s no more room for you to advance. So, this is a very good topic for women of all ages. So, where is the event taking place?
Cheletia Johnson:
The event will be at the Lincoln Recreation Center. It will be in our Iris Orchid Room. We will have directional signs to let people know where to go. The event is free. We do ask that people register, and they can register either online or calling the center and we will get them taken care of. The date is Thursday, March 9th from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. It is a great opportunity to network with other professional women that are in this area.
Grace Hallowell:
I know networking is important too and making those connections with people with new and similar backgrounds to you. Yes, so definitely check this out. Talking a little more about women’s history and women’s empowerment, what does female empowerment mean to you?
Cheletia Johnson:
Well, as a female, it’s very important that we celebrate each other and talk about the significance that we have made to not only here locally, but globally, and just celebrating us as females. Sometimes we need that pat on the back and to pat each other on the back like, “Keep going, sister. You got this,” just encouraging each other and we need that. And like, “Hey, sister, you’re looking good? I like that, you keep moving forward.” That’s what it means to me, just to celebrate each other, to motivate and encourage each other.
Grace Hallowell:
Right, lifting each other up, not tearing each other down. A lot of the work that women do sometimes goes unnoticed or unappreciated, so having those connections is a very special thing.
Cheletia Johnson:
I agree, and even just as a single mom or just a single female, a young single female, sometimes they just need that pet on the back to keep going.
Grace Hallowell:
Yeah.
Cheletia Johnson:
Not to give up.
Grace Hallowell:
I know my family, I was raised by a single mom and my grandma and my aunts and cousins, the females in our family are so strong, and I’m sure for everybody’s family as well that sometimes that strength goes unnoticed. So, check this event out. Where can people find out more?
Cheletia Johnson:
They can go to the City of College Station website and go to cstx.gov/lincolncenter, but it’s on our social media outlets as well to find information about the Women’s Empowerment.
Grace Hallowell:
Yes, Facebook, Twitter, Channel 19 if you’re watching.
Cheletia Johnson:
Exactly.
Grace Hallowell:
What should people bring to this event? Do they need to bring anything like a resume or just themselves?
Cheletia Johnson:
Just bring themselves, we will provide a light lunch. Just be ready to engage with other women, to network, to talk, and listen to these two very professional women that have been in the workforce for more than 15, 20 years, listening to their helpful tips and just to socialize and fellowship with each other. Don’t come with any… I wouldn’t say high expectations, but just come to look forward to spending time other females and to fellowship and make friendships.
Grace Hallowell:
Right, connection.
Cheletia Johnson:
Connection, exactly.
Grace Hallowell:
Is there anything else you can tell us?
Cheletia Johnson:
Just always go to the City of College Station website, check out Channel 19 for all the great things that’s taking place in the City of College Station. The spring season is a very busy season. Summer activities are getting ready to start popping up, so make sure you check out the website for those details.
Grace Hallowell:
Yes, and definitely stop by the Lincoln Center too, if you have any questions, upcoming programs, just to check out the facility.
Cheletia Johnson:
Definitely, we welcome everyone.
Grace Hallowell:
Yes, everybody is welcome.
Cheletia Johnson:
Yes.
Grace Hallowell:
All right, well thank you so much, Cheletia, for being here.
Cheletia Johnson:
Well, thank you for inviting me.
Grace Hallowell:
You’re welcome, and that’s What’s Up.
