Grace Hallowell:
What’s up College Station? I’m Grace Hallowell, and today I’m joined by Patrick Lewis. Hi, Patrick.
Patrick Lewis:
Howdy.
Grace Hallowell:
I am so excited. It’s always a fun time when you’re here to talk about Southwood and the fun things that you guys have going on.
Patrick Lewis:
Yeah. We have a lot of things happening this summer. I know we have a lot of summer camps going on at Lick Creek. So, we’re going to have summer camps the second week of June all the way to the first week of August. So we’ll have eight weeks of camp, not during the 4th of July week. We have several different classes, morning and afternoon, and a lot of different programs to run through there.
Grace Hallowell:
Very fun. I was a summer camp kid growing up, I always loved it. Just being outside and doing all of the fun activities.
Patrick Lewis:
We’re hoping this summer will be a little bit cooler.
Grace Hallowell:
Knock on wood.
Patrick Lewis:
Yes, there’s no guarantee, but we have some things to help relax you over the summer. We have some mental health programs. We have forest therapy; a free event and all ages are welcome. It’s going to be on Sundays, June 4, July 16, and August 6 from 8-9:30 a.m. where you can boost your physical health and mental wellness through scientific-based eco-therapy practice. You’ll be guided through forest-based sensory activities designed to heighten self-awareness, sense connections with the natural world, and engage your body’s senses through taste and touching plants. Texas A&M Forest Services and the Center of Health and Nature will bring this program to you. I’ve tried it myself, I’ve worked with some of the interns we had during the spring. It is quite the experience.
We also have holistic health days, where you can recharge and improve your physical and mental health at Lick Creek Park. We’ll engage in holistic health boosts related to our mind, body, and spirit. Enjoy a relaxing nature walk and participate in 45-minute yoga diaphragms with Shenzhen meditation demonstrations. This will happen at Lick Creek on Sundays. All ages are welcome. June 4, July 2, and August 6 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Grace Hallowell:
Yes, those are both very unique programs that I’m interested to try. I know I love plants and being outside in nature. It’s very relaxing and especially when this is a busy time for you and me and I’m sure a lot of other people as well. Just to take a minute and be with the plants.
Patrick Lewis:
Yes.
Grace Hallowell:
Breathe the fresh air.
Patrick Lewis:
The park is looking great. We are having a lot of wildflowers blooming with all this rain we’ve been having. It’s a great time to be out there.
We also have some programs happening at Southwood. We have self-defense classes done by Jose Aponte, and we also have Taekwondo classes. All ages are welcome. I think it’s ages 3 and up for Taekwondo and for the self-defense classes, it’s 16 and up. They’ll take place Monday and Wednesday. Self-defense will be in the morning from 8-8:45 a.m. and the Taekwondo classes will be the same day, from 4-7:15 p.m.
Lastly, if you just want to relax and just play some board games, we have Game for All at Southwood. I think it’s the fourth Tuesday and Friday of each month, where you can just come inside, play some board games, and escape the heat. And enjoy some family time or just meet up with friends and enjoy some games.
Grace Hallowell:
Yeah, take a break from your phone.
Patrick Lewis:
Yes.
Grace Hallowell:
Remember the good old days when we would play board games on the weekends?
Patrick Lewis:
Yes. Take a break from the heat. You’ll be inside, you can bring your own snacks. You can bring your own board games. So if you have a special game you want to play with your friends, you’re more than welcome to bring it if you just want to use our space for that.
Grace Hallowell:
What’s your favorite board game?
Patrick Lewis:
Ooh, right now it’s Catan, I’ve been really enjoying Catan a lot. I remember when we first started, someone brought their extra extended edition, so we had six players playing at once and that was really fun.
Grace Hallowell:
Very fun.
Patrick Lewis:
The dynamics and the victory points.
Grace Hallowell:
Yes. I was a Clue person growing up. My family was a Clue family. We would play on all the holidays, so I’m competitive when it comes to Clue.
Patrick Lewis:
Yes, same. We also have dominoes, we have Uno, we have Jenga, we have all sorts of things. Chess. If you ever want to play chess, you’re more than welcome to play. I don’t mind losing. I just liking having the chance to play people in person. It’s something I’ve loved doing since I was a kid. I want to make sure give that to the next generation.
Grace Hallowell:
Okay, if anybody has any questions, where can they find out more information?
Patrick Lewis:
They can check out the Southwood Community Center or call us. Visit the Gary Halter Nature Center, look at the youth programs, look at the adult programs and you can shift through there, see what would interest you.
Grace Hallowell:
And check out the website as well, cstx.gov/southwood or /lickcreek. Is there anything else you’d like to share with us today?
Patrick Lewis:
No. Just try to stay cool and have fun.
Grace Hallowell:
Well, thank you Patrick. And that’s What’s Up.
