Transcript

Grace Hallowell:

What’s up College Station? I’m Grace Hallowell, and today I’m joined with Patrick Lewis from our Southwood Community Center. Hi, Patrick.

Patrick Lewis:

Hello.

Grace Hallowell:

I am excited you’re here. Last week we had Carrie on to talk about some senior programs that are happening at our other senior centers as well as Southwood, but you have some exciting things to share for activities involving everybody that can attend at Southwood.

Patrick Lewis:

Yes, Southwood is officially open. We are open Monday through Friday at regular hours now. Normally Southwood was only open when we had program hours. Now we have programs throughout the day now, so it’ll be open all day now. So we have beginning line dancing in the morning, we actually have some senior computer classes along with some open computer hours, and then we do have a workshop, I think, at the end of the month, where if you want to work on your resume building, you can work on that as well. We still have the Taekwondo classes going on Mondays and Wednesdays and we also have some senior game nights on Tuesdays from six to nine. And we also still have a lot of meditation classes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. We also do have some once-a-month events where we have Game for All, where it’s just a big game night. It’s going to be the second Friday of every month. Cherry volleyball is a new thing I think Carrie touched over.

Grace Hallowell:

Yes, it sounds very exciting.

Patrick Lewis:

Yes, and the big thing I’m excited about is we do have karaoke night for the public. We have senior karaoke and we also have karaoke just for anyone. All ages are welcome. Me, I like to sing some classic Disney songs like Mulan, like Be a Man or you just want to walk the 500 miles, but we have a disco ball, we’ll have some karaoke. It should be a grand time. I don’t know if anyone has any disco fever songs they just got to get out of their chest, but.

Grace Hallowell:

Yeah, and karaoke is a good way that nobody gets to feel embarrassed, everybody’s going up there and taking their moment to feel like the next American Idol, so it’s a fun time for everybody.

Patrick Lewis:

Yeah, yeah. I know I’m not going to be the next big country singer, so I’m just going to have fun singing the moment and be merry. We also will have some social dates where we’ll have hot cocoa socials and ice cream socials coming up. Hot cocoa socials will be on January 25th and February 29th, and our ice cream socials are going to be on March 28th and April 25th. Basically on these socials, it’s just come see what the Southwood Community Center has to offer and kind of enjoy the facility and see what we have there and just have a good time.

Grace Hallowell:

Yes. The facility, if you haven’t been out there, it’s a great community center. You have the fun room with the disco ball and then if you need a computer.

Patrick Lewis:

Yeah, we have computer classes now, computer workshops, and we also have other spaces people use for different rentals and a variety of things. We’re excited just to have the facility open to the public now, and just come on over and we’ll have a good time.

Grace Hallowell:

Yes, and for those who are unfamiliar where Southwood is, now that it is open all the time, where is the center located?

Patrick Lewis:

It’s near Bachman Park. It’s right next to the Little League baseball fields, and I forgot the name of the pool center, but it’s near the skate park. It’s off of Rock Prairie. If you know where Kroger is, just go a little bit further past the hospital. It should be on your left if you’re going down Rock Prairie that way.

Grace Hallowell:

If anybody has any questions or wants to find out more about Southwood or just other programs, where can they find out more?

Patrick Lewis:

Just type in Southwood Community Center and College Station should pop up and go to the website. You have youth programs, adult programs, and then all ages that are welcome too. We want y’all to come here. This is a community center, we are trying to make it more for the community.

Grace Hallowell:

Well, yes, and check out cstv.gov/southwood as well. All of those programs are there. Thank you so much for joining me today. I look forward to seeing you out on the karaoke floor.

Patrick Lewis:

I will be out there.

Grace Hallowell:

And that’s What’s Up.
