We call them “firefighters,” but that word feels far too small for the reality of the job. In the Heart of Aggieland, our crews are the first heartbeat of hope at a scene. They respond to everything from cardiac arrests and high-speed accidents to hazardous material spills.
With Monday marking International Firefighters’ Day, join us in recognizing the dedicated members of the College Station Fire Department. Whether it’s a house fire or a heart attack, these highly trained professionals don’t just fight fires — they protect our community.
Fire suppression is only a fraction of what we do; most of our work involves emergency medical services. CSFD responds to an average of 33 emergencies each day, ranging from medical crises to car wrecks — moments that often define a person’s worst day.
And yes, we occasionally rescue cats from trees.
Our crews have stepped in for more unusual residents, too. We’ve rescued a 150-pound turtle from freezing weather, a horse from the floods of Hurricane Harvey, a pet boa constrictor from under a home, and a scarlet macaw from an apartment fire.
Our mission extends beyond the sirens. We are educators, teaching children about fire safety and first aid through school visits and fire station tours. Some of our most vital work happens before an emergency ever begins by teaching citizens how to recognize and respond to risks.
These public interactions lead to numerous follow-up safety visits and free smoke detector installations, empowering community members to take an active role in their own home safety.
