On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston with news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were free. The announcement came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect, marking a pivotal moment in American history.
More than a century and a half later, we celebrate Juneteenth as a federal holiday, a time to reflect on the past, honor resilience and progress, and come together to celebrate Black history, culture, and community.
The College Station Parks and Recreation Department invites you to learn, connect, and commemorate the holiday through three special community programs on June 17-18.
Both June 18 events will feature Cedric Watson, a four-time Grammy-nominated fiddler, singer, accordionist, and songwriter widely recognized as one of the leading voices in Cajun, Creole, and Zydeco music.
Exploring History Luncheon
Wednesday, June 17
11:30 a.m.–1 p.m.
Larry J. Ringer Library
The monthly Exploring History Luncheon will feature “A Walk-Through History: A Juneteenth Story,” presented by former Lincoln Recreation Center Supervisor Lance Jackson. The program offers insight into the significance of Juneteenth.
Attendance is free, but lunch costs $10 for residents and $12 for non-residents. Lunch reservations are required by June 12. A limited number of meals will be available at the door for $12.
Freedom Walk & Unity
Thursday, June 18
9–11 a.m.
Lincoln Recreation Center
A legacy walk around W.A. Tarrow Park, followed by a light breakfast, live music, and performances by summer camp participants. The event provides an opportunity to come together in remembrance and celebration. Admission is free.
Party at the Pavilion
Thursday, June 18
6–8:30 p.m.
W.A. Tarrow Pavilion
The celebration continues with music, line dancing, family-friendly activities, a kids’ zone, and plenty of community spirit. The event honors the joy and freedom associated with Juneteenth in a festive atmosphere for all ages. Admission is free.

City of College Station offices and facilities will be closed on Friday, June 19, for the Juneteenth holiday. Adamson Lagoon will be open from 1-7 p.m., and Cindy Hallaran Pool will be open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The Southwood Community Center, Meyer Senior and Community Center, Gary Halter Nature Center, and Lincoln Recreation Center will be closed June 19-21.
