Live Blog: Thursday’s City Council Meetings (June 14)

Settlement of Lawsuit

The council approved by a 6-0 vote this legal settlement:

In the case of Tracey Sheets, Plaintiff, and City of College Station, Intervenor, v. Get Lucky, LLC dba Lux Nightclub and Alex Ford, Defendants, of the city’s workers’ compensation lien that provides the City of College Station to receive $65,000 net of expenses and plaintiff’s statutory attorney’s fees, to redirect or assign to Sheets any funds collected pursuant to the restitution judgment in favor of the City of College Station from Ford and to authorize the city manager to execute any documents necessary to finalize the settlement of this matter consistent with the approval of this motion.

City Council Preview (June 14)

CVB Annual Report

The council will hear a report from the Bryan-College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau about its activities in 2012. The city provides the CVB with $1 million each year from the Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund.

City Council Preview (Feb. 9)

 

Here’s a quick overview of some of the items the College Station City Council will be discussing at its workshop and regular meetings on Thursday, Feb. 9. This blog is not a complete and official agenda.

Workshop Meeting (3 p.m.)

Police Department Update

Police Chief Jeff Capps will update the council on the state of the College Station Police Department, including a review of 2011 crime statistics.

Recycling Program Update

The council will receive an update on the city’s recycling program and will review previous internal studies along with possible options for the program.

Christmas at the Creek Report

The council will hear a post-event report on Christmas at the Creek, which changed locations and activities from previous years. The Parks and Recreation Department welcomed participation from many non-profit groups, businesses, the Arts Center and numerous churches. Wolf Pen Creek Park was heavily decorated and was a focal point for visitors beginning Thanksgiving weekend and continuing through New Year’s Day. The major activity nights were located at the Wolf Pen Creek Park complex on Dec. 3-4 and Dec. 10-11. Participation was estimated at 20,000 people over the four days, compared to 7,000 who attended the 2010 event at Central Park. The primary costs are part of Parks and Recreation’s operating budget, but sponsors were solicited and secured to help offset expenses.

City Council Preview (Jan. 12)

After a month-long break for the holidays, the College Station City Council will have its first meeting of 2012 on Thursday, Jan. 12, with topics ranging from the city’s tree trimming program to an update on the Medical District. This blog is intended as a quick overview of just some of the topics the council will be considering and is not a complete and official agenda. Click here to see the official agenda packets.

Citizens Charter Review Commission

The council will discuss a possible timeline for a charter amendment election, as well as areas of the city charter that need to be addressed. The Citizens Charter Review Commission had just begun its charter review last spring when a new state law shifted its focus to addressing the city election date, which was resolved with a charter amendment election in November. The commission is ready to resume its charter review but needs to know when the council expects the next charter amendment election. The earliest possible date for the election is November 2012, which will also include the presidential election. The other available dates are May and November in 2013.

City Council Preview (Nov. 10)

Workshop Meeting (3 p.m.)

Junior College Football Bowl Game

The council will receive a presentation regarding a proposal for an annual National Junior College Athletic Association football bowl game in College Station beginning in December 2012.  The council will consider approving a formal request for the bowl game on Nov. 21. In August, Blinn College began working on the proposal with the Bryan/College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau. The group has met with Texas A&M officials and has compiled anticipated attendance numbers, budget and other items.  The Brazos Valley Bowl presented by Blinn College would be played at Kyle Field on the Texas A&M campus. Hotel Occupancy Tax funds will be requested to assist with the proposal and eventual event.
