Five Things to Watch at Thursday’s City Council Meetings

 The College Station City Council will meet Thursday at city hall for its workshop (6 p.m.) and regular (7 p.m.) meetings.

Here are five items to watch on Thursday:

  1. Planning and Development Recognition: The council will proclaim October as National Community Planning Month and will recognize the city’s Planning & Development Services Department for its work on neighborhood plans.

Settlement of Lawsuit

The council approved by a 6-0 vote this legal settlement:

In the case of Tracey Sheets, Plaintiff, and City of College Station, Intervenor, v. Get Lucky, LLC dba Lux Nightclub and Alex Ford, Defendants, of the city’s workers’ compensation lien that provides the City of College Station to receive $65,000 net of expenses and plaintiff’s statutory attorney’s fees, to redirect or assign to Sheets any funds collected pursuant to the restitution judgment in favor of the City of College Station from Ford and to authorize the city manager to execute any documents necessary to finalize the settlement of this matter consistent with the approval of this motion.

Workshop Meeting (6 p.m.)

CVB Annual Report

The council will hear a report from the Bryan-College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau about its activities in 2012. The city provides the CVB with $1 million each year from the Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund.

City Council Preview (March 8 Meetings)

Here’s a quick overview of some of the items the College Station City Council will be discussing at its workshop and regular meetings on Thursday, March 8. This blog is not a complete and official agenda.

Workshop Meeting (4 p.m.)

NOTE: The workshop is starting an hour later than usual so the council can attend a special beam-signing ceremony at Fire Station No. 6, which is being built at the corner of Tarrow and University Drive.

Revenue Rescue Cost Recovery Program

The council will hear a presentation from Fire Chief R.B. Alley on the Revenue Rescue Cost Recovery program, which is designed to recover costs for responding to certain vehicle accidents, vehicle fires and hazardous material spills or leaks. The council unanimously approved program’s concept in November. Estimates indicate that about $126,000 — costs currently paid by taxpayers — could be recovered each year through the program. Examples include responses to accidents where hazardous materials such as gasoline, diesel fuel, antifreeze are spilled and have to be properly cleaned up, and accidents where injured people have to be cut from their vehicles with the hydraulic rescue tools such as the Jaws of Life.

City Council Preview (Dec. 8)

Workshop Meeting (3 p.m.)

CVB Audit Update and Progress Report

The council will discuss an update provided by the Bryan-College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau on the progress made since the recent audit by the city’s internal auditor.  Changes have been implemented, including adoption of an employee handbook, redefined economic development impact reporting, etc. 

Health Plan Claims Expenditures

The council will receive an overview of the employee benefits plan. The City of College Station’s health plan is self-insured, and the current health insurance program is administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield.
