City Council Preview (Feb. 23)

Here’s a quick overview of some of the items the College Station City Council will be discussing at its workshop and regular meetings on Thursday, Feb. 23. This blog is not a complete and official agenda.

The workshop and regular meetings can be watched live on Suddenlink Ch. 19, or online. Previous council meetings are archived on the website. A detailed live blog from the meetings will be posted on this site and can also be accessed through the city’s Facebook page.

Workshop Meeting (3 p.m.)

Economic Development Master Plan

The council will hear a presentation on the development of an economic development master plan. The preparation of the plan was included in the approved Fiscal Year 2012 budget and will assist the city’s efforts outlined in the adopted Council Strategic Plan.  Staff has identified a consultant team for the project, developed a scope and negotiated a contract amount.  The project will be led by the Planning & Development Services Department, which will be assisted by the City Manager’s Office and the consultant team.  This approach allows the city to secure a higher level of services from the consultant team and will do so at essentially the same cost as originally budgeted with the Comprehensive Plan. The contract is on the consent agenda in the regular meeting.

Live Blog: Thursday’s City Council Meetings (Feb. 9)

The meeting was adjourned. The council meets again on Feb. 23.

Joint Neighborhood Parking Task Force

The council unanimously approved the formation of  a Joint Neighborhood Parking Task Force. The task force will consist of members of the city council and Planning and Zoning Commission. Councilmembers who will serve on the task force are Dave Ruesink, Blanche Brick and Julie Schultz.

8:44 p.m.

Ad Hoc Committee for Arts Council Relations

The council unanimously approved the creation an ad hoc committee to consider topics concerning the Arts Council of Brazos Valley, including the lease agreement for the Arts Council building, and the construction and use of the Wolf Pen Creek Festival Grounds. The subcommittee will consist of three council members and three members of the Arts Council Board of Directors. The subcommittee will be dissolved after completing its report. Councilmembers who will serve on the subcommittee are Julie Schultz, Katy-Marie Lyles and Nancy Berry.

The regular meeting has adjourned. The council is now finishing up what was left of the workshop agenda.

City Council Preview (Dec. 8)

Workshop Meeting (3 p.m.)

CVB Audit Update and Progress Report

The council will discuss an update provided by the Bryan-College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau on the progress made since the recent audit by the city’s internal auditor.  Changes have been implemented, including adoption of an employee handbook, redefined economic development impact reporting, etc. 

Health Plan Claims Expenditures

The council will receive an overview of the employee benefits plan. The City of College Station’s health plan is self-insured, and the current health insurance program is administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield.

City Council Preview (Nov. 10)

Workshop Meeting (3 p.m.)

Junior College Football Bowl Game

The council will receive a presentation regarding a proposal for an annual National Junior College Athletic Association football bowl game in College Station beginning in December 2012.  The council will consider approving a formal request for the bowl game on Nov. 21. In August, Blinn College began working on the proposal with the Bryan/College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau. The group has met with Texas A&M officials and has compiled anticipated attendance numbers, budget and other items.  The Brazos Valley Bowl presented by Blinn College would be played at Kyle Field on the Texas A&M campus. Hotel Occupancy Tax funds will be requested to assist with the proposal and eventual event.
